on paul ryan, of course to keep up the pace and perform as well as mitt romney did in his debate last week with president obama. the president himself even talked about it yesterday. gave an interview with diane sawyer. she asked him first of all what happened to you when you got on stage with old mittens? >> that debate what happened? >> obama: well governor romney had a good night. i had a bad night. it's not the first time i had a bad night, but i think what is important is that the fundamentals of what this race is about haven't changed. governor romney went to a lot of trouble to try to hide what his positions are. >> bill: good way to sum it up. i had a bad night. he had a good night, but he just told a back of lies. and then he was asked what about the participates in tonight's debate. first of what do you expect from paul ryan? >> obama: congressman ryan is a smart and effective speaker, but it ideas are the wrong ones and joe understands that. >> bill: oh. oh. so he is saying don't lower your expectations. and what do you think joe biden has to do mr. president.

the information that is available from the romney/ryan campaign it is not possible to cut tax rates as much as you'd like without eliminating deductions that may hurt the middle class. specifically, you can't do this without changing rules on capital gains taxes, dividend taxes and the romney campaign has said they will not do that. you cannot cut taxes and keep the middle class deductions and can't cut taxes and keep lower rates on capital gains. now the romney campaign has said, look, we would work with the congre. we would -- we can't tell you what exactly it would look like because we'll work with the congress but the tax policy center says it can't be done. given what we know, it can't be done. the second claim, let's talk about the auto bailout, fight begun this on the campaign trail. vice president biden made the case that romney would let detroit go bankrupt. listen. >> we knew we had to act for the middle class. we immediately went out and rescued general motors. we went ahead and made sure that we cut taxes for the middle class, and in addition to that, when that occurred what, did romne

paul ryan's ideas as he is against mitt romney. that elevates ryan as well. >> it seems clear in choosing chris van holland they will go against the first ryan budget, the first medicare plan and also the ryan book. they will go after the budget cuts and troo to tag mitt romney with the severity, using the term relatively, of the ryan budget cuts. >> right. rom uh any down played the ryan road map. keep in mind the first ryan budget plan included privatizing social security, at least to a certain extent. that's something ryan then dropped in his subsequent budgets. it was there and he was one of the advocates of the plan to put it in the market. secondly the medicare issue. those entitlements, we'll ha from biden about thursday. a lot of democrats think he dropped the ball not pushing the issues against mitt romney. joe biden will read ryan's book and go after those entitlements. >> up next, as mitt romney focuses on foreign policy we'll get a reality check on the challenges abroad. attempt to balance the budget. and what ryan and romney are calling is outrageously stupid. what the president is doing is inadequate. >> okay. al? >> good description. nothing partisan about that description. you know, al, the governor brings up a point. i'm not sure that i agree with how he describes the two sides, but i will say that when joe biden -- let's just take these two issues right here. to talk about the stupidity of this campaign. joe biden won't even talk about raising entitlement -- your date of eligibility for entitlements one year despite the fact when fdr set the life expectancy at 62, we're now up, 79, 80, something like that. and you've got three people working for every one person getting these entitlements. and then on the republican side, this $5 trillion tax cut, the numbers don't add up. it doesn't matter what you do. the numbers don't add up. nor does the administration's belief that if you just tax rich guys, you're going to take care of the deficit. it's just -- it's nonsense. >> joe, you're absolutely right. neither side is seriously addressing this.

at the bit. did paul ryan keep the romney momentum going following the first presidential debate? >> for sure. he handles the debate with class. he was a great debater. he presented his facts and stayed on key even though joe biden was giggling, basically chuckles the clown old-time and was very rude and condescending. the moderator did not help much either. i was not a fan of the moderator at all. tracy: what was the striking statement? what did we learn that could make a difference in the election? >> they each had something but the most important thing for this is i think that paul ryan's overall debate performance made him kind of seal the deal for the romney/ryan ticket. i don't think in actuality and people will be upset when i say this but i don't think this debate is going to determine in the polls -- i don't think you're going to see a bump. i think it will go back to next week's debate when you have the presidential debate and what obama does and how romney performs. this was full of. it is fun to talk about but i don't think it will move one iota in the polls. ashley: you agree wit

. what did mitt romney do? he brought in paul ryan who has even less, if you could imagine that, foreign policy experience except maybe perhaps voting against tougher sanctions on iran while he was in congress. as far as that argument's concerned, i think it's rather debunked. i want to read to you very quickly a quote from mitt romney from that video with the 47%. this is his -- this is his foreign policy in a nutshell. so what do you do -- this is about peace in the middle east. you say you move things along the best way you can. you hope for some degree of stability. but you recognize this is an unsolved problem and we kick the ball down the field and hope ultimately somehow something will happen and resolve it. that's what mitt romney said on foreign policy behind closed doors. whatever he says today in a couple of hours, you got to juxtapose that to that quote in the video when he thought no one else was listening. >> john, one of mitt romney's problems is the only specifics he's given as to how his foreign policy differs from president obama is that he's going to talk tougher and s

the medicare issue around his neck i think the republicans roll out what mitt romney did, paul ryan as a good reputation and he is not gaff pro like joe biden. that is the contrast for tonight. gerri: let's talk about the presidential election for a second. the contenders, mitt romney and obama. romney is getting a bum from his performance in the debate. when you look at the swing states, seems to be doing a little better. is this sustainable and does it put more pressure on ryan to have a really good night? >> it is not sustainable. i have a specific reason for that. when you look at this data when you see is the romney campaign was a great performance by romney and a bad one by the president. that shows up and there has been movement. the bulk of a movement has been with women. if you look at the polls, women are in a dead heat between romney and obama. the only republican or the last republican to win against the democrat was george herbert walker bush in 1988. i don't think that will happen. what will happen is you will start to see women shifting back not as far as they were prior to the

of time in the buckeye state. that's perhaps why we saw governor romney and paul ryan reuniting last night in lancaster, ohio. big crowd down there, about 8,500 jammed into the town square. but there is some ground to be made up for this campaign. polls show that president obama is still holding a lead over governor romney in ohio. but those polls also show that the governor is closing in, within striking distance now of the president. speaking of the president, he also was in ohio this week and admitted publicly that he had a bad night out in denver for that first presidential debate. obviously a lot of republicans and democrats agreed with his assessment. the president said he was too polite and that voters can expect him to see him being a lot more active in the second debate up at hofstra university in new york. back here in ohio, paul ryan's got a big day here. he's got two stops in ohio, starting with this rally a little later this morning, and then he'll go up to minnesota before ending the night in wisconsin. he's expected to take sunday off the trail, little rest for the weary, if
